Actually, independant journalism is almost the only way to be responsible. Just look at the MSM's constant lies for three decades : Kuwayti incubator babies, genocide invented in Kosovo, Saddam's WMD, Syrian jihadists labelled "moderate rebels", Ukrainian Maidan US-backed coup labelled as a "revolution" and so on...
And those hydroxychloroquine that was supposed to help and was promoted by the MSM until when Trump promoted it, and they immediately branded it killing people despite 40 years of proven studies of no harm at all.
Europe is tired, but it still has a lot to offer the world; not least a balance to the United States.
One great gift that independent bloggers offer is diversity of thought. Read WaPo and the NYT, is like reading an echo chamber of the Democratic Party. And I no longer trust them to tell the whole truth.
When Rago wrote his criticism of bloggers, the MSM was the only real source of news. Now there are literally thousands of individual sources posting every day. Bloggers can carve out their niches by developing a focus, developing trusted sources, and by giving readers what they cannot get elsewhere.
And it goes beyond ideology.
I am conservative, yet I subscribe to Glen Greenwald and Bari Weiss because they are intellectually honest.
Go for it.
I spent a year living on Corso Buenos Aires; happy time. Tell us more about Milan.
I followed bloggers in the early days and found some insightful like Sullivan or Kaus. They were professional journalists who could critique journalism and that was a public service I valued. The narrative capture of MSM print/TV in the late 90’s was nothing remotely like the current era. IMO the role of independent journalists with experience and sources is far more essential now. I get the FT, WSJ, NYT and Economist. Way too much stuff to digest but covers financial and foreign reporting pretty well. I only occasionally read editorials or Op Ed’s. I get news summaries from substack which I find invaluable plus subscribe to Taibbi, Sullivan, B Weiss and a few others and add and drop periodically. I view most of these as media critiques and think they are invaluable…
I was a journalist in Israel and quit about a decade ago because I couldn't fathom how I could write any meaningful news and still make a living. Had the infrastructure that exists today been around I might still be at it. I enjoyed your work going back to your time in North Africa. I appreciate your intellectual honesty, and I look forward to seeing more on Substack.
